What to expect

during your

Diver Development Session

Prerequisites

  • Valid SCUBA Certification from a recognized training agency.
  • Completed a dive within the last 12 months
    • If you have not been diving for longer than 12 months you must complete a Refresher Class prior to a Driver Development Session.
  • Acceptable medical questionnaire (physician approval may be required based on responses)
  • All dive gear.  We will provide you with a tank & weights.  See FAQ for details.
  • Certification and/or prior training in any specific skill you wish to practice & improve upon

What is this?

Your Open Water course taught you the fundamentals of diving. Continuing education courses like Advanced Diver & Rescue help to enhance those skills.  Perfection, however, comes from practice.

Proper weighting & gear configuration is personal to every diver.  Neutral buoyancy & trim takes further education to master. Working with reels or lift bags takes repetition for proficiency.

This offers you a one-on-one session with a dive professional where time is spent solely on your specific needs so you can maximize every moment diving.

Pre-Consult

Speak one-on-one with a training assistant, divemaster or instructor as we learn where you are in your diving career & what skill(s) you would like to spend time improving upon.  Examples may include:

  • Proper weighting
  • Neutral buoyancy
  • Perfect trim
  • Fin techniques including back finning
  • Gear configurations
  • DSMB deployment
  • any other skill you would like assistance with

Pool Session

Work one-on-one with a Divemaster or Instructor on the skill(s) you want.  Our staff has a wide variety of tools available that can be used to enhance your skill(s) like:

  • Immediately reviewable video of a particular skill allowing real-time feedback showing you what you look like in the water
  • Games & toys to simulate task loading underwater
  • Teaching aids like lift buckets, reels, obstructions & restrictions

FAQ

  • Do I have to buy all the gear?
  • No. But then you will need to hold your breath a really long time.  As a certified diver, it is assumed you have invested in gear, however, we know this may not be the case.  If not, we have rental gear available you can use for the pool session.
  • Keep in mind, telling us you need to rent "all the gear" will get you a BCD & regulator.  If you made it this far without a mask & fins it is time to spend a few bucks on the personal gear.
  • You will need to make arrangements to pick up/return the rental gear for the pool session.
  • Included in the course is a tank and any weight you may need.  While there is no charge for using these items, you must come in the shop to pick up/return them.  DOT regulations limit our ability to transport SCUBA gear.

  • So can I use this as a personal "Refresher" course before a trip?
  • No.  This is not a refresher course.  This isn't a course of any kind.  This is a chance to have the undivided attention of a dive professional to help you improve what you feel needs improved.
  • We invented this entire program to supplement the training received from all dive courses.
  • We are not teaching new skills nor reviewing the required skills for a refresher.  No log books will be signed.
  • This is designed to assist in mastery of skills you have already learned while showing tips & tricks our staff has accumulated from hours spent underwater in all kinds of environments.

  • Can this class be modified around my schedule?
  • Actually, yes.  This is a one on one experience with one of our staff members tailored to your needs.  There are, of course, limitations like pool & staff availability.  Once assigned, a staff member will speak directly with you to compare schedules & identify a date & time, but more critically, to identify your goals & tailor an experience to help you accomplish those goals.

  • It says one-on-one, but can I take this with my significant other?
  • Yes.  You do NOT need to buy a session for each of you.  You have a staff member devoted to you for the entire session.  If you choose to share that attention with your spouse, child, dive buddy or stranger on the street, that is your choice.

  • How experienced do I need to be?
  • Are you newly certified? Then this experience is for you.
    • A diver who was certified yesterday can benefit from time spent establishing proper weighting & achieving neutral buoyancy.
  • Have you been diving for decades? Then this experience is for you.
    • A diver who has traveled the world for decades can benefit from seeing themselves underwater & enhancing existing skills.
  • Somewhere in-between? Then this experience is for you.

  • What about getting out of the pool & heading to open water?
  • This is possible.  If you need open water to accomplish your goals, we are happy to discuss scheduling some time at one of the local quarries.  Additional costs will apply based on your particular needs.

  • I bought a new piece of gear, can I use this to learn how to use it?
  • That depends.
  • If "new gear" is a new BCD then yes, our staff can work with you to properly adjust it & assist you in achieving neutral buoyancy & trim because you have already been trained to use a BCD.
  • If "new gear" means you order something you are not previously trained to use, like a full face mask, drysuit, side mount, etc; then no.  This is not a certification course.

  • Is this just paying for advice that used to be free?
  • No.  Advice on how to become a better diver has been and always will be free.  This is an option for individual attention, in water, from a dive professional dedicated to assisting you in what you personally want to accomplish.

Medical Questionnaire

All training agencies require every student to complete a medical questionnaire prior to any in water training.

We teach scuba, we are not doctors, so we cannot answer questions on specific medical conditions or questions.  This universal questionnaire will determine if you must obtain physician approval prior to scuba diving.

Please answer it honestly, it is for your safety.

You may complete this form prior to signing up for class to determine if physician approval is required.

Read the instructions on the form.  Your self reported answers will determine if a physician's approval is required prior to diving.  Once we receive the notification of your completed waiver, we will contact you if a physicians approval is required.

We are NOT PERMITTED by the training agency to allow any in-water training without physician's approval if such approval is required.  We encourage you to complete this form as early as possible to ensure adequate time is available should you need to obtain approval.

  • What if I ignore your advice & wait till the last minute to complete this form?
  • Please don't.  Physician approval, if required, is due by 5pm the Wednesday prior to your first in water training session.  Completing the form last minute & then not having adequate time to get to your doctor for approval is like leaving that term paper unfinished until the night before it was due & then your computer died.  Your high school English teacher didn't accept that excuse & neither will we.  We will move you to our next scheduled class according to our reschedule/cancellation policy.  Please help us by doing your homework.

Reschedule/Cancellation Policy

Life happens, we get it & we want to find a way to get you diving.

  • Your schedule changed
  • Ours does too sometimes.  We get it.  You may reschedule to an alternate class anytime without an additional charge 14 days prior to the start of the class.  Within 14 days, there is a $35 fee to reschedule.

  • You need to cancel
  • You changed your mind, doctor doesn't think it's a good idea, whatever.  It's ok.  You may cancel any course (in writing please) for a full refund 14 days prior to the start of the course (this is why we advise you do that questionnaire early).  Please understand that space is limited in our courses, we cannot offer refunds for cancellations within 14 days of the original course start.
    • Please note: codes issued from the training agencies cannot be refunded once you have begun the e-learning regardless of when you cancel.  If you begin the e-learning any refund will be less the cost of the e-learning.

  • Somebody got sick
  • We get sick sometimes too.  No problem.  If you wake up with the plague we prefer you do not come to scuba class.  A big part of the education is teaching you how to take the thing in our mouth and put it in your mouth if there is an emergency & we don't want the plague.  We will work with you to move you to a future class at no charge.  We do, however, reserve the right to assess a charge if we find this policy is being abused.  Please don't do that.

  • You ignore safety instructions
  • Safety is our paramount concern.  Your safety, other students' safety & our staff's safety.  You are required to follow established safety requirements & follow the instructions of our staff.  Violations of safety procedures may result in removal from class without a refund.  Just don't do it.

  • You ignored requirements
  • Come on, really?  Showing up for scuba class without a swim suit does not entitle you to a free reschedule.  We honestly can't believe we have to type this but yes, it happened.
